Not from the books but I was thinking about how a village might discover, at first light, their charter stone broken and how troubling that would be.
I can image a deathly silence as one lone villager, perhaps a charter mage, walks towards the stone while a small group gather and watch nervously at the edge of the marsh.

Yes! Perfect setup for the scene you describe. Like discovering that the village well has gone dry, but far more sinister. Now, they have to wonder, what is hunting them?
